If there will be a flurry of activity for the Baltimore Orioles before the trade deadline on Sunday, as promised by one source close to the team, it won't likely happen until the weekend.

The team is talking with several teams, but no deal appears imminent. The Orioles have continued to show interest in Pittsburgh Pirates left fielder Matt Lawton, who would be acquired for outfielder Larry Bigbie. Lawton, who entered Wednesday's game with a .383 on-base percentage, would likely hit in the second spot in Baltimore's lineup. Baltimore has also fielded several calls about right fielder Jay Gibbons. But right now the Orioles are simply trying to figure out their best course.

"It's a lot of dancing around right now," one baseball source said.

The proposed trade of right-hander Sidney Ponson to the Texas Rangers for right fielder Richard Hidalgo appears to have stalled because of Baltimore's refusal to pay for the majority of Ponson's contract. The pitcher is scheduled to make approximately $15 million through next season. Hidalgo is a free agent at the end of the season.

Marrero Out 6 to 8 Weeks

After saying on Tuesday night that Eli Marrero's thumb was simply jammed, the Orioles reevaluated the injury on Wednesday and now say the outfielder will miss 6 to 8 weeks with a sprained thumb. Marrero was placed on the 15-day disabled list. To fill his spot, Baltimore recalled outfielder David Newhan from Class AAA Ottawa. Newhan, hitting .366 in Ottawa, is expected to join the team Thursday.

Newhan will be in his third stint with the Orioles this year. He began the season with Baltimore, but was optioned to Ottawa on June 18. He was recalled only a few days later after B.J. Surhoff was placed on the disabled list on June 22. That stint lasted until July 13. In 49 games this season with the Orioles, Newhan is hitting .198 with three home runs. . . .

Gibbons was held out of a second consecutive game because of back spasms.

He was taken out of Friday's game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays because of the spasms and missed the next two games. He had returned to the lineup on Monday but was a late scratch on Tuesday.
