First-round draft pick Fran Vazquez has decided to remain in Europe instead of joining the Magic this season.

The 6-foot-10 power forward from Spain was the 11th pick in the June draft and was expected to play right away for the Magic, but surprised the team and his agent with his decision Thursday.

"I've said no because I was afraid to adapt to the American way of life and of not giving the level they have asked," Vazquez told the Spanish newspaper Malaga Hoy.

The Magic will retain Vazquez's NBA rights indefinitely.

* NETS TO SIGN MCINNIS: Free agent G Jeff McInnis will sign a one-year deal with an option for a second with the Nets, said McInnis's agent, Steve Kauffman.

The 6-4 guard averaged 12.8 points for Cleveland last season.

* WALKER VISITS HEAT: Free agent F Antoine Walker met this week with Heat President Pat Riley, though no contract offer was made.

Agent Mark Bartelstein said there's mutual interest but declined to discuss the likely timetable for a deal.

* MILICIC STAYS: The Pistons exercised their contract option on reserve C Darko Milicic, picked second behind LeBron James in the 2003 draft.

Milicic has averaged 1.6 points and 1.2 rebounds the past two seasons.
