By the Numbers
Nationals pitchers with a higher batting average than SS Cristian Guzman prior to last night's game: Luis Ayala and Joey Eischen (.333), Livan Hernandez (.242) and Esteban Loaiza (.200). Guzman entered last night hitting .188.
Brad Wilkerson made his second straight start in right field, a move designed to take the strain off Jose Guillen's right elbow, in which he has tendinitis. Manager Frank Robinson said he didn't know when Guillen would move back to right. Wilkerson has started 87 games in center, 12 games at first, eight games in left and three games in right.
The first doubleheader in Nationals history will be started by the club's two shakiest pitchers, Tony Armas Jr. and Ryan Drese. Armas, who will start the afternoon game, is coming off his second road win of the year, but it lowered his road ERA to just 6.35. Drese was off to a miserable start before Tuesday's game was rained out, and is 2-4 with a 5.09 ERA for the Nationals on the road. In the night game, Drese will face Cory Lidle, who is 5-0 with a 2.54 ERA in eight starts against the Nationals/Expos.
