Top Story Lines
1. A void in Montgomery County? The county's top male golfers last season were all seniors and it remains to be seen who will take their place. Junior Billy Peel, who was third in the state qualifier, is the top returning player for Maryland 4A/3A three-time defending champion Churchill. Sherwood senior Chas Golibart finished second in the Maryland 4A/3A tournament as a sophomore and Hilary Lawson returns for Magruder.
2. No. 1 in No. Va.? Westfield senior Zach Spees is the returning Virginia AAA Northern Region champion, but he will be challenged by a deep field that includes Chantilly junior Joe Monte, who is coming off a sensational summer season. Robinson's John Buchanan, Yorktown's Brian Brady and Oakton's Malcolm Craig also should contend.
3. Can Forest Park keep it up? The Woodbridge school has won the past two Virginia AAA Cardinal District titles and the sport might be more popular there than at any other school in the Washington area. Coach Babette Overman said more than 50 players tried out and she kept a roster of 35. Freshman Joe Buttgereit shot an even-par 70 earlier this week to win a district mini-tournament.
Churchill graduated many of its top players from last season's Maryland 4A/3A championship team, but should get a boost from the return of senior Devin Kay. After playing for the Bulldogs as a sophomore, Kay missed last season but returns after a summer in which he won the 16-17 age group in the Bobby Bowers Memorial Tournament. . . .
One player who might challenge Kay is Northern sophomore Sam Hoffer, one of several returning players for the Patriots. Hoffer finished sixth in the state tournament last season as Northern finished second to Churchill. Also returning is Bowie senior Ray Hyre, who finished third in the state tournament. His main competition in Prince George's County should come from Douglass sophomore Aaron Anderson. . . .
Severna Park already has established itself by winning the Anne Arundel Fall Preview Tournament, led by medalist Matt Guante and second-place Kelly Lynch. South River freshman Josh Eure finished third in the 12-team field. . . .
Virginia AAA Northern Region defending champion Westfield has a new coach in top amateur player Tim Vigotsky, but the bulk of the Bulldogs' lineup returns, including Michael Spear and Tim Vigotsky Jr. . . .
In Prince William County, keep an eye on Battlefield's Stephen Spaulding, who finished one shot behind eventual state champion Daniel Kefale in the AAA Cedar Run District tournament. Mike Matta had a strong baseball season for Potomac (Va.) in the spring and is expected to be one of the Cardinal District's top golfers. . . .
Greg Brouse of Heritage has shot 69 twice already this season to win the Cheer's Sports Open and a Dulles District mini-tournament.
