Former North Carolina quarterback Nick Cangelosi will be the starter for Georgetown's season opener at Bucknell, Hoyas Coach Bob Benson said yesterday.

At the start of preseason camp, Benson said Cangelosi, who transferred to Georgetown last year after redshirting his freshman season at UNC, was in a "neck and neck" battle with former starter Keith Allan. Yesterday, Benson said the race remained extremely close until the end, but that Cangelosi demonstrated the leadership he had been looking for despite never having started a college game.

"It's like anything else in life, you can't apologize for your age, you can't apologize for who you are, or what you've done in the past," Benson said. "You just have to take the opportunity and seize it."

Cangelosi threw for 59 touchdowns and more than 5,000 yards at Camden (N.J.) Catholic, but he played in only one game last year, when the Hoyas finished last in the Patriot League in total offense.

"It was difficult to be on the sideline just watching it, but you can't complain, you've just got to come out and work hard," he said. "I did that this summer, and it paid off."
