Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay will not pitch again this season after breaking his leg last month.

"It's frustrating. We tried to do everything we could to come back," Halladay said Friday.

"This is something that needs to run its own course."

Halladay was struck in the left shin by a line drive off the bat of the Rangers' Kevin Mench on July 8. It was initially thought that he would miss four to six weeks.

The 2003 AL Cy Young Award winner pushed himself to come back in less than a month, twice trying to make starts but canceling them when he was unable to run or take fielding practice.

"Early on, we thought it was going to go faster than it did," Halladay said. "It still shows up in X-rays."

Halladay is 12-4 with a 2.41 ERA.

* YANKEES GET LAWTON: New York acquired OF Matt Lawton, a left-handed hitter, from the Cubs for a minor league pitching prospect, believed to be RHP Justin Berg.

Lawton, who cleared waivers earlier Friday, is batting .268 with 11 homers and 49 RBI in 120 games with Cubs and Pirates. Chicago will save the roughly $1 million remaining on Lawton's contract.

* WELLS TALKS STEROIDS: Red Sox LHP David Wells said Thursday that he believes there are major leaguers probably still using steroids.

"There's no question in my mind that there's a lot of guys out there still that are probably on them," Wells said in an interview on WSKO in Providence, R.I. "I mean, they're just playing Russian roulette."

He said the testers should "go to the guys who have been losing weight dramatically, are not as big as they were last year, listen to their excuses" and test them.

Wells discussed Rafael Palmeiro, saying a lie detector test may be the best method to show when the Orioles 1B used steroids. He said Palmeiro's accomplishments should be removed from baseball's record books if he used them for a while.

"If he's been doing it awhile, then go ahead and erase [his accomplishments]," Wells said.
