Seahawks defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes has been hospitalized by team doctors and is undergoing a series of tests, Coach Mike Holmgren said yesterday.

Holmgren wasn't specific about the nature of Rhodes's illness.

"He complained of some sickness yesterday and our doctors put him in the hospital overnight," Holmgren said when asked him about Rhodes's absence. "They're doing a series of tests the next couple of days."

* STEELERS: Wide receiver Hines Ward and Pittsburgh reached terms on a four-year contract, ending months of wrangling over a restructured deal.

Ward missed the first two weeks of training camp and returned only because the franchise held to its policy of not negotiating with holdout players.

* JETS: After spending his entire 10-year career with New England, Ty Law will start at cornerback for New York at Kansas City on Sunday, Coach Herman Edwards announced. Edwards also said rookie Kerry Rhodes, a fourth-round draft pick, will join Law in the secondary.

* BROWNS: Rookie Charlie Frye has won the backup quarterback job ahead of Doug Johnson, Coach Romeo Crennel said.

* CARDINALS: Arizona signed wide receiver Reggie Swinton, and Coach Dennis Green quickly made him the team's kick returner.
