Gonzaga holds the edge in recent history in its newly revived series against visiting Georgetown Prep. Playing for the first time since 1988, the Eagles won last season's game, 17-14. The contest between the Jesuit schools was supposed to be resumed in 2003 but was postponed due to Hurricane Isabel. Tomorrow's game kicks off at 1 p.m. at Gonzaga; tickets are $10 and will be sold at the gate. Proceeds benefit the Washington Jesuit Academy. Both teams are 1-0. . . .
In Howard County tonight, Atholton will shoot for its first victory over visiting River Hill since 1997. The Raiders have seven starters back on both sides of the ball, including senior RB Matt Winger, who rushed for 993 yards last fall. River Hill, the two-time defending league champion, will start junior Daniel Hostetler at quarterback. He takes over for his brother, Ben, who is now playing at Georgetown. . . .
At Northwest, replacing All-Met QB Ike Whitaker is perhaps too big a task to place on one set of shoulders. Instead, the reigning Maryland 3A champion Jaguars -- now in 4A -- will turn to the duo of senior Dexter Korto and junior Josh Volpe under center. . . .
When Falls Church City school George Mason travels to Stuart for tonight's 7:30 game, it will be the first meeting between the Mustangs, a member of the Virginia A Bull Run District, and a AAA team in more than 20 years. George Mason has already proved it can play against teams from bigger classifications, shutting out Dominion, a AA school from Loudoun County, 31-0 last week. RB Travis Greene ran for 118 yards in that game. . . .
Brentsville goes for its 14th season-opening win in a row tonight at Battlefield.
