Red Sox at Yankees

A classic matchup -- Boston's Tim Wakefield against New York's Randy Johnson. Wakefield has won his past three starts, but is 1-2 with a 3.58 ERA against the Yankees this season. Johnson is 3-0 with a 4.62 ERA against Boston.

Red Sox: OF Johnny Damon was not in the starting lineup yesterday against the Yankees because of a sore left shoulder. He received a cortisone shot after Friday night's game and has been playing with discomfort since hurting the shoulder on a slide last Sunday.

Royals: RHP D.J. Carrasco has an inflamed right shoulder and will be inactive for about seven days.

White Sox: Activated 3B Joe Crede from the 15-day disabled list before yesterday's game against the Angels. Crede went on the DL on Aug. 26 with a hairline fracture of his right middle finger after being hit by a pitch.

Yankees: RHP Mike Mussina, recovering from elbow inflammation, planned to play catch for the second straight day. If all goes well, he intends to throw a bullpen session Tuesday and return to the rotation during the Yankees' final homestand from Sept. 19 to 25.
