The exciting Virginia AAA Northern Region individual competition is already under way, with Chantilly senior Brad Siragusa and Herndon junior Abe Dagnachew having registered impressive victories in early meets. Siragusa won the Monroe Parker Invitational last weekend by 13 seconds over West Springfield junior Mike Spooner, another top contender. Washington-Lee senior Chris Tyson, who also should be in the regional title mix, was third. Dagnachew won the Virginia Tech Invitational by 30 seconds. . . .
Culpeper senior Devin Cornwall, perhaps the AAA Northwestern Region favorite, had a strong start with a 40-second victory at the Chancellor Invitational last weekend. . . .
While Jefferson is ranked 13th in the Harrier magazine national rankings, some other local teams have been recognized in preseason rankings. Brentsville is rated third in the Nike Team Nationals Southeast Region rankings and 23rd in the country by Harrier. The Tigers finished second in their first meet, the Great Meadows Invitational, 12 points behind Oakton. . . .
Georgetown Prep senior Steven Duplinsky, a two-time All-Met, will again lead the Little Hoyas in cross-country -- after returning from his work as a triathlete. Duplinsky participated in the Triathlon Union Elite World Triathlon Championships in Gamagori, Japan, over the weekend, where he competed on the United States' junior team. Duplinsky topped a field of 70 with a time of 55 minutes 8 seconds in the event, which included a .75-kilometer swim, a 20-kilometer bike race and a five-kilometer run.
