The St. Louis Cardinals got OF Reggie Sanders back yesterday, but lost 1B Albert Pujols for a short time.

Sanders was on the 15-day disabled list for nearly two months with a broken leg he suffered in an outfield collision with Jim Edmonds on July 15.

Manager Tony La Russa said Pujols has had a sore upper right leg since the team began the current 10-game homestand a week ago. He said team trainers advised giving Pujols "a day or two" off.

* MANAGING THE FIELD: The Marlins re-signed IF Mike Mordecai after he managed one of their minor league teams this season.

Mordecai, 37, guided Class A Jamestown to a 31-44 record in the New York-Penn League.

* FOGG DEMOTED: The Pittsburgh Pirates demoted RHP Josh Fogg to the bullpen for the second time this month and recalled RHP Ian Snell from Class AAA Indianapolis.

Snell, who was 11-3 with a 3.70 ERA in the minors, will take Fogg's start tonight against St. Louis.

* CEDENO OUT: Cubs rookie SS Ronny Cedeno is out for the rest of the season with a broken bone in his left hand, an injury suffered Saturday when he was hit by a pitch from San Francisco's Brad Hennessey.

"I can't do anything, that's part of the game," Cedeno said.
