Braves OF Andruw Jones hit his 50th homer, becoming the first major leaguer to reach that mark since Alex Rodriguez (57) and Jim Thome (52) in 2002. Jones's homer, the 300th of his career, was a solo shot into the second deck in left field off Geoff Geary in the eighth inning in Philadelphia. The 28-year-old became the 12th player in major league history to hit 300 homers before his 30th birthday.
* QUICK TOSS: Pirates LHP Oliver Perez was ejected in the second inning in St. Louis after hitting Hector Luna of the Cardinals in the left leg.
Perez was not involved in a pregame confrontation between the teams Aug. 24 that led to suspensions of Pirates batting coach Gerald Perry and Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan along with then-Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon.
This was Perez's second start since coming off the 15-day disabled list from a broken big left toe suffered on June 26.
After being hit, Luna took a few steps into fair territory before home plate umpire Eric Cooper tossed Perez. Cooper then appeared to warn Cardinals starter Jason Marquis before the top of the third.
Perry was back on the Pirates' bench after serving an eight-game suspension for punching Duncan.
* BUSCH COUNTDOWN: Hall of Famer Stan Musial participated in the Busch Stadium countdown, removing his uniform No. 6 from the right field wall. A crowd of 40,172 was the 37th straight of 40,000 or more in the stadium's final season.
