No. 4 Virginia Tech vs. Ohio

Giant Killers: Ohio Coach Frank Solich didn't make too much of his team's 20-16 overtime upset of Pittsburgh last Friday. The former Nebraska coach said beating Virginia Tech on the road will be much more difficult. The Bobcats are 331/2-point underdogs in today's game. "We're jumping from the frying pan into the fire," Solich said. "If Virginia Tech gets some breaks, they've got a chance to play for it all, along with a few other teams in the country."

For Openers, Hokies Are Pretty Good: Under Coach Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech has won 16 of its 18 home openers. The Hokies lost to Clemson, 22-10, in 1987 and to Boston College, 20-14, in 1995. Virginia Tech is 34-7-1 against nonconference opponents at Lane Stadium since 1991, winning 19 games in a row.

Unfinished Project: Today's game was supposed to mark the debut of the newly expanded west side of Lane Stadium. But construction has been delayed, and ticket holders for 23 luxury suites and other new areas -- about 1,100 fans -- have been moved to other seats. Athletic Director Jim Weaver said earlier this week he feared the project won't be completed by the end of the season.
