The Hokies will play without senior left guard Reggie Butler, who sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during last week's 45-0 shutout of Ohio. Butler, who has played in 34 games and started eight, could return for the Oct. 1 game at West Virginia. Against the Yellow Jackets, senior Will Montgomery will move from center to left guard, and junior Danny McGrath is expected to make his first career start at center. McGrath's ability to make pre-snap reads and adjustments against Georgia Tech's complex defense will be a key for the Hokies.
Impressed With Vick
Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick has thrown five touchdowns during the past two games, and Georgia Tech Coach Chan Gailey said the junior is throwing the football better than he anticipated. Vick will have to play well against Georgia Tech's defense, which leads Division I-A with 12 take-aways, including 10 interceptions.
"He's a better passer than I thought he would be," Gailey said. "I knew he was a good runner and knew about his athleticism, but he's a better thrower."
The Virginia Tech defense is allowing fewer than 225 yards of offense per game, including only 145 passing yards. If Georgia Tech quarterback Reggie Ball plays and is effective, the Hokies will probably get their stiffest test to date. Yellow Jackets wide receiver Calvin Johnson was last season's ACC rookie of the year and is one of the most explosive receivers in college football. He averaged 17.4 yards per catch last season and is averaging close to 20 this season. At 6 feet 4 and 230 pounds, Johnson is a matchup problem and has great leaping ability and strong hands. Cornerbacks Jimmy Williams and Roland Minor must prevent the Yellow Jackets from completing long passes to Johnson.
Let's Try It Again
The Yellow Jackets and Hokies have played only twice, and both games were in Atlanta. The teams were supposed to play in Lane Stadium in the 2000 Black Coaches Association Classic, but a lightning storm shortly before kickoff caused the game to be canceled. The game was never played.
