Sophomore Julianne Bausch converted a penalty kick on the game's final play to give Georgetown Visitation a 2-1 victory over visiting National Cathedral in an Independent School League AA division soccer game yesterday in Georgetown.
After National Cathedral was called for handling the ball in the penalty area, Bausch placed her kick into the lower left corner for her fifth score of the season.
"I didn't realize how deep we were into injury time until she made the kick, the referee blew the whistle and the girls started celebrating," Cubs Coach Zeff Yusof said. "The teams didn't even kick off after that. It really was the last kick of the game."
Junior forward Caroline McCarthy scored for Visitation (4-2-2, 2-0) in the 32nd minute, and National Cathedral responded in the 73rd minute.
Sophomore forward Kate Collins's second goal of the game came on a breakaway with four minutes left in regulation, giving host St. Stephen's/St. Agnes its first soccer win this year, 4-3 over ISL A foe Georgetown Day in Alexandria.
"It was a big one for us, our goalkeeper came up huge, she stopped four breakaways in the last four minutes of the game," Coach Karen Ruberg said, referring to freshman goalie Ruth Geiger. "She had at least 12 saves."
