As the only Virginia A school, other than Manassas Park, in Northern Virginia, George Mason has to look outside the area for games against similarly sized schools. That gives Coach Tom Horn plenty of scheduling flexibility.
One season, his Mustangs faced teams from Region A and Region C and had one game against each of the other districts in Region B, in which George Mason plays.
"That was awesome," Horn said. "We certainly felt like when we read the Internet or newspaper, we knew where we stood because we could compare ourselves" through scores from around the state.
This week, the Mustangs (3-1) hit the road to play Richmond area school Goochland (4-0) in a pivotal matchup for a midseason nondistrict game: Goochland is one of five unbeaten teams in Region B Division 2, and a George Mason loss would mean that the Mustangs would probably have to wrest the Bull Run District regular season title away from Manassas Park to reach the playoffs.
"You win this one and give yourself a legitimate shot," Horn said. "You lose this one and the cards are laid out for you and you have to win your next five."
George Mason senior running back Travis Greene has carried 58 times for 573 yards to lead the Mustangs.
