Central (Md.), off to an 0-5 start this season and amid a 19-game losing streak, fired football coach Chris Riley and his entire coaching staff yesterday.

The school's boys' basketball coach, Brian Taylor, will complete the season as interim coach, taking over a team that that has been outscored 270-12.

"Not that our staff wasn't trying hard, but it just wasn't happening," Central Athletic Director Ed Bowie said. "Being outscored by 50 points every game, things weren't getting better. We felt it necessary to make a change."

Riley was in his third season as head coach at the Capitol Heights school, with a career record of 3-22.

"We just weren't getting it done on the field," Riley said. "I take responsibility for that. I understand how it is. You've got to get victories."

McNair Scores Three

South River junior forward Abigail McNair scored all of her team's goals in a 3-1 home field hockey victory over Annapolis. Junior forward Melissa Bierley, sophomore forward Kerri Dress and junior midfielder Molly Gregoire had assists for the No. 10 Seahawks (10-2). . . .

Junior forward Micaela O'Toole scored two goals to lead top-ranked St. Stephen's/St. Agnes (10-1) to a 5-0 victory over visiting Episcopal.

C.H. Flowers Blooming

Junior Arielle Dawson, who shot a 79, freshman Nicole West (85) and sophomore Dionne West (87), all of C.H. Flowers, were among five girls from Prince George's County to qualify for the Maryland golf championships on Oct. 22 at the University of Maryland. Eleanor Roosevelt sophomore Caroline Sweet (84) and Largo junior Ariel Pall (95) also advanced.
