Drew Brees and Antonio Gates played pitch and catch against a hapless Kansas City defense, and even LaDainian Tomlinson got a piece of the action.

Brees threw three touchdown passes to Gates and finished with 324 yards passing as host San Diego beat the Chiefs. Tomlinson threw his third touchdown pass of the season, a 17-yarder to Eric Parker.

Brees completed 25 of 43 passes, with touchdown throws of 19, 20 and 35 yards to Gates.

Gates put the game out of reach when he caught a short pass at the Kansas City 32, bulled through SS Sammy Knight and ran into the end zone for a 28-13 lead with 9 minutes 10 seconds left.

"He is very powerful," Brees said. "You can't really tackle him with one guy. You see him break tackles all the time, like he did on the last touchdown. Obviously, his ability to catch the football is special."
