The decision by Old Mill not to resume its suspended game against Annapolis -- making the result essentially a forfeit -- is having an impact on the 3A East playoff race. The game, which Annapolis led, 30-21, early in the fourth quarter, was halted due to a shooting at the concession stand. The Panthers have been credited with a win, which gives them a 6-2 record and the inside track for a playoff spot over River Hill. Old Mill (6-2) still is in strong position to make the postseason in the 4A East Region. . . .
After a slow start, Lackey senior quarterback Aaron Smith has found his stride. He threw for only three touchdowns during his first five games as the Chargers went 3-2. In three straight wins since, he is 23 of 38 for 451 yards, 9 touchdowns and 1 interception. Lackey faces Northern on Friday. . . .
Atholton and Reservoir, two teams that won a combined four games last year, are in position to make the 2A South Region tournament after posting wins last week. Atholton (5-3), which beat Centennial, 28-7, on Saturday, can earn its first playoff berth in 20 years by beating Glenelg (6-2) on Friday and Wilde Lake on Nov. 11. But if Atholton suffers a loss, Reservoir (4-4) can make the playoffs in its third varsity season with wins over Howard (3-5) and Centennial (2-6).
