Theodore Roosevelt at Coolidge
Outlook: Coolidge still has work to do if it hopes to secure the D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association West Division regular season title and top seed in the division playoffs. Theodore Roosevelt (6-4, 2-1) could push the Colts (7-2, 3-0) out of playoff contention if it wins the game by at least eight points and Dunbar (6-2, 2-1) defeats Cardozo, which is winless in the division. The Rough Riders' defense faces a tough task in containing Colts junior RB Dwan Thornton (1,309 yards, 17 touchdowns). The Rough Riders will counter offensively with their own potent rushing attack behind senior RB Jelani Walker (1,189 yards, 16 touchdowns).
No. 1 Damascus
Outlook: Northwest handed the Swarmin' Hornets their only regular season loss last year in a 27-24 classic. Now the reigning 3A champion Jaguars (4-3) are on the outside looking in on the 4A West playoff picture, while top-ranked Damascus (8-0) will likely lock up the top seed with a win. Northwest RB Anthony King, who has rushed for 100 or more yards in five straight games, will be tested by one of the area's staunchest run defenses.
No. 17 Quince Orchard at Gaithersburg
Outlook: After cruising to a 5-1 start, Gaithersburg (6-2) is in the toughest part of its schedule. A win over the Cougars (7-1) would go a long way in helping the Trojans maintain the final 4A West playoff spot. No. 17 Quince Orchard, meanwhile, has allowed only seven points in three games since losing to top-ranked Damascus.
Lackey at Northern
Outlook: The winner is just about ensured a spot in the 3A South playoffs, while the loser will need a lot of help next week. Two of Southern Maryland's top running backs -- Lackey (6-2) sophomore Mike Johnson (1,046 yards, 15 touchdowns) and Northern (6-2) junior A.J. Brown (1,117, 10) -- will battle for control of the game clock.
Gonzaga vs. St. John's
Tomorrow, 3, at Blair
Outlook: Both teams are fighting for playoff berths in a tightly bunched league, with the possibility of a three-way tie for third or fourth place, depending on the outcome of tomorrow's game between O'Connell and Paul VI Catholic. Gonzaga (6-3, 4-2) can clinch the third seed with a victory. The Cadets (5-4, 3-3) have resuscitated postseason hopes with three consecutive victories, outscoring opponents 92-21.
