Jets quarterback Brooks Bollinger will start over ailing Vinny Testaverde against Carolina on Sunday after a strong performance in a loss to San Diego. And wide receiver Wayne Chrebet (concussion) and tight end Chris Baker (broken ankle) were placed on injured reserve.

Chrebet was undergoing more tests yesterday after hitting his head hard on the turf in the closing minutes against the Chargers, and it appears his career could be over. Chrebet, 32, has at least nine concussions in his college and pro career.

Bollinger replaced Testaverde late in the third quarter and sparked the Jets to a near comeback victory. He was 11 of 20 for 106 yards with two touchdown passes. Testaverde tweaked his strained right Achilles' tendon against the Chargers.

* MERRIMAN HAS SURGERY: Chargers rookie linebacker Shawne Merriman had surgery to insert pins in a dislocated bone in his left wrist. San Diego has a bye this weekend, and he is expected to play on Nov. 20 against the Bills. Merriman, the 12th overall pick in the draft out of Maryland, was hurt in Sunday's win over the Jets. He leads the Chargers with five sacks.

* RHODES UPDATE: Seahawks Coach Mike Holmgren said he will meet with defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes today to discuss how the 55-year-old defensive coordinator should continue after his second stroke-like episode in two months.

"He is feeling much better," Holmgren said. "But I don't want to minimize what happened."

Since his first stroke in September, Rhodes had already ceded game-day play calling and some midweek game-planning to linebackers coach John Marshall. Holmgren said he will discuss with Rhodes possibly trimming his on-field time.

* MORE INJURIES: Cardinals Pro Bowl defensive end Bertrand Berry has a torn left pectoral muscle and could be out for the season.

Berry was injured in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the Seahawks. The team said that it had not been determined whether surgery would be required. Berry led the NFC with 14.5 sacks last season. . . .

49ers tackle Jonas Jennings is scheduled to have arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder today in an effort to save his first season with San Francisco.
