at No. 9 Sherwood
Outlook: A win here would ensure Gaithersburg (6-3) a trip back the 4A West playoffs after missing out on the postseason last year for the first time since 1996. The Trojans will have to compete with one of the area's hottest QBs in Deontay Twyman, who has led Sherwood (8-1) to convincing victories in the last two games, during which he has thrown eight touchdown passes.
With respect to the 4A West playoffs, losses by each team last week turned this game into a win-or-go-home situation for both parties involved. For Northwest (5-4), last year's 3A champion, a playoff berth would mark another major step for the program considering its massive overhaul in personnel following last season. After a 2-2 start, Richard Montgomery (6-3) turned things around behind RB Kevon Calhoun, who has rushed for more than 100 yards in five of the last six games.
Atholton at Wilde Lake
Outlook: In Howard County, Atholton (6-3, 5-3 Howard County) can clinch its second postseason appearance and first in 20 years with a victory over the Wildecats (5-4, 4-4). Atholton, led by senior RB Matt Winger (1,580 yards, 16 TDs), is looking to beat Wilde Lake for the first time in 10 years to qualify for the Maryland 2A South Region tournament.
Lackey at McDonough
Outlook: All McDonough (6-3) needed to do was win its final two games to lock up the top seed in Maryland 2A South. Following a loss last week, the Rams could miss the playoffs altogether with another defeat here. Senior A.J. Wallace, who has scored 20 touchdowns the past five games, will need help against a Lackey defense that has allowed more than 18 points to just two opponents. For the first time in school history, Lackey (7-2) will go to the 3A South playoffs for the third consecutive season.
Prince George's 4A
Bowie at Suitland
Outlook: It's not quite win-and-get-in, but it's pretty close with the final playoff berth at stake in the Maryland 4A South Region. After three consecutive losing seasons, Bowie (7-2, 6-2 Prince George's 4A) has been a big surprise, led by RB Jason Randall. Defending state champion Suitland (6-3, 6-2) likely will need a big game from RB Monty Clayton to earn its first victory this season over a team with a winning record. Even with a victory, Suitland will need help from other teams to make the playoffs.
No. 10 Urbana
at No. 15 Linganore
Outlook: In the Monocacy Valley Athletic League's Chesapeake Division, Linganore (8-1, 5-0) can clinch the league title by defeating the Hawks (8-1, 4-1) for the fourth time in five meetings. This game could be the first of two meetings, as both teams have clinched berths in the Maryland 3A West Region tournament.
