Edison wide receiver Justin Smith (10 catches, 197 yards) out-gained the entire Loudoun Valley offense the last time the two teams played in late October, but it wasn't enough to give the Eagles a victory in what turned out to be the decisive game in the AAA National District. On Friday, Edison is hoping for better results when it again travels to Purcellville for a Northern Region Division 5 semifinal game. Loudoun Valley senior running back Tommy Schonder was the workhorse the last time the teams met, rushing for 114 yards on 34 carries. . . .

A loss to Courtland on Nov. 4 ended James Monroe's chance at the Battlefield District title, but a 33-14 win over previously unbeaten Washington & Lee -- a former Group A rival -- allows the Yellow Jackets (9-1) to enter the AA Division 3 playoffs on a high note. Quarterback Delano Green passed for 279 yards and four touchdowns on Friday and finished the regular season with more than 1,700 yards. . . .

How difficult was it to crack the Region B Virginia A Division 2 playoffs? Goochland went 10-0 -- and must play a semifinal on the road. That's because top seed Gretna (the Division 3 state champion the past two years) and defending Division 2 state champion Manassas Park also went 10-0. The fourth seed, Chatham, went 9-1, with a one-point loss -- to Gretna.

Justin Smith and Edison face Loudoun Valley in Friday's Division 5 semifinal.
