-- Tavon Austin and Quinton Garrus combined for 277 rushing yards on 16 carries as Poolesville fell to Dunbar (Balt.), 46-7, in the 1A South Region final.

It marked the third straight year Poolesville lost to Dunbar in the region final. Like last season, when running back Nathan Irby rushed for 354 yards against the Falcons, the combination of Austin and Garrus proved too much for Poolesville to contain on Saturday.

Garrus and Austin sprung free for two touchdowns apiece, and by the time Austin scored his second -- a 35-yard reverse early in the third quarter -- the Poets (10-2) had jumped to a 32-0 lead.

Jared Christman rushed for 109 yards on 25 carries for Poolesville, which stayed competitive early. Down 6-0, the Falcons (10-2) marched to the Poets 5-yard line. But the drive stalled there, as Poolesville was unable convert on fourth down. The Poets capitalized and scored 18 points in the second quarter.

"We wanted to try and control the ball and grind it out," Falcons Coach Larry Hurd said. "We got a little rattled in the second quarter when things went bad. With that said, Tavon Austin is a beast. Quinton Garrus is a beast. We've had trouble tackling great runners all year long, and that continued today."

The loss did little to detract from the fact that Poolesville has developed one of the most successful 1A programs in the state. The Falcons are 32-4 over the last three seasons under Hurd, with their only regular season loss coming to Beall last month.
