Herndon boys' basketball coach Gary Hall, who compiled a 319-146 record in 18 years at his alma mater and won a Virginia AAA Northern Region title last season en route to a state runner-up finish, is stepping down to spend more time with twin daughters Morgan and Ashley, freshmen who started in the back court on the Briar Woods junior varsity team this season.
Hall, whose Hornets finished 21-3 and won the Concorde District title before losing to Wakefield in the region quarterfinals Tuesday, coached his daughters' fall league team last year. His resignation was first reported in yesterday's Examiner.
"Even though they were playing at the JV level, I was somewhat torn sometimes, my body in one gym and my thoughts elsewhere in another gym," said Hall, who plans to remarry this spring. "That was tough. Time passes so quickly, especially the high school years, and I just don't want to look back and feel like, 'Geez, I spent so much time with other people's children and not my own.' "
Hall was an assistant at South Lakes when Grant Hill played there. At Herndon, he coached Scottie Reynolds, now a freshman guard at Villanova and considered by many to be the best Northern Virginia player since Hill. . . .
Oakton announced yesterday that Dave Spannbauer would not return next year. Spannbauer led the Cougars to a 9-14 record in his one season as coach.
