Guard Carl Elliott had 16 points and 11 rebounds for his third straight double-double, and he added six assists to lead George Washington to an 86-74 victory over La Salle yesterday in Philadelphia.

Maureece Rice added 21 points and Dokun Akingbade had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Colonials (17-8, 9-5 Atlantic 10), who won their third straight after dropping four in a row.

Ruben Guillandeaux scored 15 points and Darnell Harris contributed 13 for the Explorers (10-18, 3-11), who are 2-9 over their last 11 games. They have lost seven straight to the Colonials dating from Jan. 11, 2003.

The Explorers struggled shooting the entire game, going just 6 for 24 (25 percent) in the first half and 22 for 62 (35.5 percent) overall.

George Washington used a 20-6 run on the way to a 42-27 halftime lead, outscoring the Explorers 22-2 in the paint and holding a 27-12 edge in rebounding. La Salle did not make a field goal during the final 10 minutes 35 seconds of the half.

The Explorers opened up the second half with a 14-6 run to cut the lead to 48-41 with 15:58 remaining, but would come no closer. The teams traded baskets for most of the second half before George Washington pulled away in the final minutes.

Harris, La Salle's leading scorer, came off the bench for the third straight game since suffering an ankle injury.

· NORTHEASTERN 73, GEORGE MASON 50: Bennet Davis scored 20 points as the Huskies handed the visiting Patriots their worst loss since Feb. 26, 2005.

George Mason finished the regular season at 15-14, 9-9 Colonial Athletic Association. It's the first time the Patriots failed to win 10 games in conference play since the 1997-98 season. George Mason will be the No. 6 seed in the CAA tournament and will play a first-round game against 11th-seeded James Madison on Friday at 8:30 p.m. in Richmond.

Northeastern (12-18, 9-9) opened the game on a 24-6 run and shot 57.1 percent in the first half, while the Patriots shot 33.3 percent and committed nine turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. George Mason was down 41-20 at halftime.

· COLGATE 70, NAVY 62: Jon Simon scored 24 points as the Raiders won in Hamilton, N.Y.

Kyle Chones scored 14 points and Kendall Chones added 10 for Colgate (10-18, 5-9 Patriot League).

Greg Sprink scored 29 points to lead the Midshipmen (14-15, 4-10).

Navy earned the No. 7 seed in the Patriot League tournament and will travel to either Bucknell or Holy Cross for its first-round game on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

· COPPIN STATE 50, HOWARD 46: Tywain McKee had 19 points and eight rebounds to lead the host Eagles (9-18, 7-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Darek Mitchell scored 14 points for the Bison (9-18, 5-10).

· CATHOLIC 85, HOOD 75: In Frederick, Patrick Dwyer scored 25 points and Scott Fumai added 17 points and nine rebounds as the Cardinals (22-5) won the Capital Athletic Conference tournament and earned an automatic berth to the Division III tournament.
