FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Feb. 26 -- Hayden Penn, one of the Baltimore Orioles' prized pitching prospects, sprained his left ankle Sunday night at the team hotel and could be out several days, according to Manager Sam Perlozzo.
X-rays on the ankle were negative, but Penn also had a precautionary MRI exam. Results of the exam showed a Grade 1 sprain, which is considered minor. Penn arrived at the team's training complex on crutches, but later discarded them.
"Yesterday or last night, carrying some boxes, from what I understand, he twisted it on a step or something," Perlozzo said.
Penn was expected to compete for the fifth spot in the rotation or perhaps a spot as a long reliever, but this setback could derail those hopes. He was scheduled to pitch in the exhibition home opener on Friday but will have to skip that outing.
"Obviously it's going to push him back, and the farther it pushes him back, the tougher it's going to be for him to win a spot," Perlozzo said. "Hopefully in a day or so it won't be so serious and we can get him on the hill and we can try to not have him lose so much time."
Last season, Penn lost a chance to join the rotation when he had an emergency appendectomy in May one day before what would have been his first start of the year. He posted a 15.10 ERA when he finally joined the rotation in September.
Perlozzo, meanwhile, announced his rotation for the spring. Steve Trachsel will start the exhibition opener on Thursday against the Florida Marlins in Jupiter, Fla. He will be followed by Erik Bedard on Friday, Daniel Cabrera on Saturday, Jaret Wright on Sunday and Adam Loewen on Monday. Perlozzo said there is no significance to the setup of the rotation.
"We keep you guessing until the end," he said.
Television Schedule SetThe Mid-Atlantic Sports Network will carry all 162 regular season games and seven exhibition games this season, with 30-minute pregame and postgame shows, the network announced.
MASN will have 99 games, and MASN2 will carry 63 when Washington Nationals games are on the main channel. All cable and satellite providers that carry MASN will have MASN2. Also, WJZ-13 in Baltimore will simulcast 25 Orioles games.
Top to Bottom
Orioles Manager Sam Perlozzo's preliminary lineup for the season: Brian Roberts, Melvin Mora, Nick Markakis, Miguel Tejada, Aubrey Huff, Ramon Hernandez, Jay Gibbons, Kevin Millar and Corey Patterson/Jay Payton.
"That could change a little bit from 5 and 6 depending on who's pitching and the success rate of the guys with the matchups," Perlozzo said.
