A 20-year-old bicyclist was critically injured Thursday morning when he was hit by a car along the U Street corridor, according to D.C. police.

Officer Anthony Clay, a department spokesman, said the Major Crash Unit is investigating the scene at 11th and U streets NW. He said the male victim was unconscious but breathing when he was taken to an area hospital.

The accident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. Police could not immediately say which direction the vehicle and bicyclist were traveling.

As of noon, all streets near the accident site were reopened.

Police also were investigating a suspicious package several blocks away at 16th and U streets Northwest. That intersection was closed, along with southbound 16th Street between U and V streets and westbound 15th Street at U Street.
