The District’s Tyrieshia Douglas moved within one fight of the championship round at the U.S. Olympic trials in women’s boxing with a victory late Thursday night in Airways Heights, Wash.
Douglas, a two-time national silver medalist flyweight, dominated Virginia Fuchs of Kemah, Texas, in a 31-19 decision, earning a rematch Friday night with Christina Cruz of New York.
Cruz, who fell out of the winner’s bracket with a loss Thursday night, defeated Douglas earlier this week in a 20-15 decision. If Douglas were to defeat Cruz, she would advance to Saturday’s final against Marlen Esparza of Houston.
To earn an Olympic team slot, Douglas would have to beat Esparza twice. Women’s boxing will be contested in the Olympics for the first time this summer at the London Games.
In other news, Baltimore’s Franchon Crews was eliminated from the tournament with a defeat to middleweight Raquel Miller in a 26-15 decision. Tiara Brown, who has been training in the Washington area, also lost, her Olympic hopes ended by Mikaela Mayer of Los Angeles in a 23-18 decision.
