Five cities — Istanbul, Turkey; Tokyo, Japan; Baku, Azerbaijan; Doha, Qatar; and Madrid, Spain — met the International Olympic Committee’s Wednesday deadline to submit application files to hold the Summer Games in 2020.

The application file provides the IOC with an overview of each city’s project and will be reviewed by an IOC-appointed working group. At its meeting in May in Quebec City, the IOC’s executive board will decide whether to accept the candidacies of all five of the cities.

The city selected to hold the 2020 Games will be announced Sept. 7, 2013, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
