District native Tyrieshia Douglas and Baltimore’s Franchon Crews kept alive their hopes of winning U.S. Olympic team slots in women’s boxing by winning their challengers bracket bouts Wednesday night.

Douglas, a two-time national champion flyweight, defeated Taversha Norwood of Marietta, Ga., in a fourth-round stoppage at the inaugural U.S. women’s boxing trials in Airway Heights, Wash., as Crews narrowly topped 2010 U.S. champion Tiffanie Hearnof San Diego in a 27-26 decision.

The District’s Asia Stevenson was eliminated from the event that concludes this weekend, succumbing in a fourth-round stoppage against Mikaela Mayer of Los Angeles.

Douglas and Crews both fight again Thursday. Douglas faces Virginia Fuchs; Crews takes on Raquel Miller.

Women’s boxing will be featured in the Olympic Games for the first time this summer in London.
