Why did John Boehner hug Nancy Pelosi? (video)

You don’t see this often: House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) embraced on the House floor Thursday. Watch the video here:

The reason? Pelosi this week is marking her 25th anniversary in the House. The minority leader said in brief remarks on the House floor after the hug that Thursday’s tribute was a complete surprise to her. Aides confirmed later she had no idea that Boehner and House Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) had planned the brief tribute.

Several Democratic lawmakers were seen throughout the day sporting red and blue pins that noted Pelosi’s anniversary.
