Sooner than you know, the holiday season will be upon us. If an after-dinner cordial is the kind of thing you like to serve your guests, look no further than this week’s slivovitz recipe from food writer and cooking instructor Cathy Barrow. This is a project to start now — no, seriously, like this instant — because you need to let it steep for at least 90 days.

Well, what do you know, we are right in the middle of Italian prune plum season. You can find them this week at today’s FreshFarm Market in Penn Quarter, Saturday’s 14th & U Farmers Market, Sunday’s Bloomingdale Farmers Market and others listed in our map below.

If you’re not the drinking type, those plums would be quite nice substituted for the apples in Jane Touzalin’s recent Staff Favorites recipe for Amy’s Easy Apple Cake.
