Washington’s annual beer-and-food showcase will take place June 8 and 9 at the National Building Museum. For the general public, tickets will become available at noon Eastern time on Thursday, April 5. Members of the Brewers Association, which stages the event, and the American Homebrewers Association can take advantage of a pre-sale beginning at noon on Tuesday, April 3.

The BA used to handle ticket sales itself, but this year, the trade association is handing over the task to Ticketmaster. Barbara Fusco, the BA’s sales and marketing director, explains:

“Ticketmaster’s ticketing system is more robust than anything the Brewers Association, as a not-for-profit trade association, can provide. They can handle the high-volume demand for Savor tickets. Ticketmaster’s system provides greater security for our ticket purchasers and decreases scalper access to buying tickets, among other benefits to our members and guests.”

Last year, there were numerous complaints from would-be purchasers that they were unable to upload the ticket site or were shunted to a different site. According to Fusco, all public tickets were snapped up in about 10 minutes. If you were delayed, you probably got shut out.

But you’ll pay a little more for the improved service.

Admission to Savor costs $120 per person, and each customer is limited to four tickets. In addition, Ticketmaster will charge a $4.50 “convenience fee” per ticket and a $3.50 “processing fee” per order, which would add an extra $21.50 to a maximum order of four passes. (BA and AHA members get docked a flat $6 per order fee.)

Admittance to one of the “salons” — educational events featuring talks by brewers and tastings of special beers — will cost $30 more. Details were posted over the weekend. Among the topics are a Stone Vertical Epic Tasting; Yes We Can! (a discussion of the benefits of canning craft beer); Sours Ales From the Distant Land of Indiana; and Drink My Shorts! (focusing on Short’s Brewing Co. of Bellaire, Mich.).

You can also check out the list of 74 attending breweries and their beers as well as the small-plate offerings whipped up by Adam Dulye, executive chef at The Monk’s Kettle in San Francisco, in conjunction with Federal City Caterers.

Also, the Brewers Association has announced that Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Chico, Calif., and Boulevard Brewing Co. in Kansas City, Mo., have teamed up to do the commemorative brew for Savor 2012. Sierra Nevada brewed a dark ale, somewhere along the spectrum between an amber and a stout, using barley grown on the brewery’s estate and a little wheat.

After being dry-hopped, the beer retraced the steps of the pioneers (albeit in reverse) along the California Trail. At Boulevard, the beer was aged in more than 40 Missouri oak barrels that previously held wine and spirits.

After a final blending in February, the beer, dubbed Terra Incognita, was bottle-conditioned with the wild yeast Brettanomyces. Each Savor attendee will receive a souvenir bottle as a parting gift.
