‘Capitol Fourth’: Beat the crowds, see the rehearsal

Can’t wait (can’t wait!) to see Megan Hilty at the PBS Capitol Fourth concert on the Mall tommorrow, but dreading (dreading!), the long lines and crowds?

Well, on this Fourth of July eve, it feels patriotic to let ardent Hilty fans know they can beat the heat and get an early listen-in on tomorrow’s concert at tonight’s dress rehearsal. Although it’s closed to the public, those near the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol at 8 p.m. sharp will get an earful of Hilty’s opening patriotic mash up — “Yankee Doodle,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “God Bless America.” Tom Bergeron of “Dancing with the Stars” hosts the concert, which also includes Phillip Phillips, Matthew Broderick, Javier Colon, Josh Turner, Kool & the Gang, Kelli O’Hara, Russell Watson, Amber Riley and the National Symphony Orchestra, and runs about two hours.

As for Hilty? As she told Post reporter Jessica Goldstein, she’s “very excited” about performing in ”A Capitol Fourth” and visiting D.C.:

“Hopefully I’ll hit up the museums,” she said. “And I would die if I could have a tour of the White House. I actually got to meet the president [at] ‘Barack on Broadway,’  ” a fundraising event for Obama at New York’s New Amsterdam Theatre at which Hilty performed. “I’ve never been so star-struck in my life.”

Sounds like she shouldn’t have any trouble getting into the West Wing, since she’s such good buddies with POTUS. She laughed in agreement. “Oh, now we’re best friends.”
