Chuck Brown, the “Godfather of Go Go,” did not make his scheduled appearance at the Howard Theatre this weekend: The 75-year-old musician has been hospitalized for joint pain and inflammation, a statement from the theater says.
Brown’s concert will be rescheduled for June 29, with all tickets honored and refunds available at the point of purchase.
Brown’s Facebook posts indicate that his health problems began before the weekend. On March 1, he posted that he was “under the weather and the doctor says I need a couple says rest,” cancelling an appearance during the CIAA tournament. On April 12, Brown posted to his Facebook page, “I'm still in recovery mode, but doing better and looking forward to partying with ya'll again soon! I'm grateful for all the well wishes and kind notes — there's no love like DC love!” His family updated the page on April 22, saying, “The Brown family wants to extend their thanks and deepest appreciation to everyone for their concern, prayers and best wishes for Chuck Brown during his hospitalization. They ask for your continued prayers.”
Calls to Brown’s manager were not returned and, aside from the Facebook post, Brown’s family has not commented.
Update: Brown has also cancelled an appearance at Celebrate Brooklyn on May 10. He has been replaced by Booker T. Jones.
