The hundreds of “Call Me Maybe” parodists and lip-synchers can call it quits: No version of the song is ever going to top the one just released by “Sesame Street,” which features Cookie Monster imploring his officemates to share their cookies, rather than their digits.
“Share it Maybe” draws upon the storied history of Carly Rae Jepsen parodies and covers, even referencing the Jimmy Fallon version with the kids’ instruments. In this version, the lyrics have been changed to reflect what the furry monster really wants: Some chocolate chip cookies. Sample lyrics: “You cookie showing / and me hunger growing / let’s get skim milk flowing / we’ll start this snack going, baby.”
He’s just the latest in a long line of people to cover the song, from Katy Perry to Colin Powell. In May, we called it the “viral hit of the season,” and critic Chris Richards correctly predicted it as the front-runner for the song of summer 2012. Just as Carly Rae Jepsen’s career has been on a roll, lately, so too has “Sesame Street’s” parody writers: They’ve also done takes on the shows ”Six Feet Under,” “Mad Men,” and “Glee.”
