Fashionable Halloween costumes

There are some Halloween celebrations that call for a more than a skin-barring Seasame Street character. (File this under anti-sexy costume rant.) Luckily, some of the latest runway trends translate surprisingly well into last-minute costumes. By adding a few accessories and the right make-up, you can transform your recent fashion splurge into a costume that will be noticed for all the right reasons.

Several designers, including Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig of Marchesa, produced glamorous Flapper and 1920s inspired gowns for their spring 2012 collections — just in time for the new “Great Gatsby” film. Have a drop-waist dress you can’t find enough excuses to wear? Pick up a beaded headband and go as Daisy from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic.

Marc Jacobs Spring 2013 (Peter Michael Dills/GETTY IMAGES)

Or take a cue from Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2013 collection and channel the 1960s. A mod-style stripped shirt paired with a short, blonde bob and black leggings makes a great nod to Andy Warhol muse Edie Sedgwick.

Ralph Lauren Fall 2012 (Frazer Harrison/GETTY IMAGES FOR MERCEDES-BENZ F)

Pair fall’s must-have tweed blazer with a long skirt and riding boots a la Ralph Lauren’s Fall 2012 show and go as Lady Mary Crawley of “Downton Abbey.”

Channel Holly Golightly of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” with a favorite little black dress, large black shades and a hat like the ones seen at Alice Temperley’s 2013 collection during London Fashion Week.

Oscar de la Renta 2011/ Winter 2012 (Maria Valentino/FTWP)

Jealous of Kiera Knightly’s role alongside Jude Law in the new adaptation of “Anna Karenina?” Invest in a fur hood or ushanka which have popped up in fall collections for the past few seasons. Match the hat with a gown worthy of the Russian aristocracy.

Michael Kors 2011/ Winter 2012 (Maria Valentino/FTWP)

Have a giant faux fur coat in your closet? Die one strip of hair white (or use a clip-in extension) and snag a pair of long red gloves to be Cruella De Vil.
