See ‘Intimacy 2.0,’ a dress that becomes transparent as you flirt

Bad at flirting? Here’s a dress that will do the talking for you.

The “Intimacy 2.0” dress is made from e-foils, which become clear when they’re zapped with electricity. The designers say that “Social interactions determine the garments’ level of transparency, creating a sensual play of disclosure.” So, if a gentleman at the bar gets a woman’s heart racing, the dress will show more skin. A dull conversation from an unwanted suitor will keep the dress opaque.

The dress features a neckline that plunges to the midriff, with sculptural coils of the e-foil protruding from the shoulders. Though it looks a little bit like a “Project Runway” castoff, the company is inviting haute couture fashion designers to collaborate.

Studio Roosegaarde, which has also invented a dance floor that can generate electricity, describes the dress as “perfect for the red carpet,” but that would be true only if the wearer were planning to have a wardrobe malfunction. When the dress goes transparent, it’s quite see-through — so, flirting in the Intimacy dress is a way to wear your heart on your sleeve, and not much else.
