Signature Theatre on the Campaign Trail

Signature Theatre has launched a fundraising campaign, “Friends of Signature Million Dollar Challenge.” If Signature can raise $500,000 by the end of November, the challenge donors will match the money for a total of $1 million.

“It’s part of a comprehensive effort we’ve been making over the past several years to really grow our contributive revenue,” said Maggie Boland, Signature’s managing director. “Because of the size of the theater and the amount of new work that we do. . . we can’t expect ticket sales to grow that much.”

Actual donations to Signature have risen in the past three years, and last year’s “Friends of Signature” campaign raised almost $400,000. Ticket sales are a less predictable source of revenue, as more purchases are taking place the day of the show instead of well in advance.

“Donors do realize that doing new work is rather risky,” said Eric Schaeffer, Signature’s artistic director, “but also really vital and important to making a theater community.”
