The California Zephyr train carrying about 178 passengers and the crew hit a farm vehicle stopped on the tracks near Benkelman, Neb., an Amtrak news release said. A small number of passengers were taken to a hospital, but no serious injuries were reported.

The train was headed to Chicago from Emeryville, Calif., when it derailed close to the borders of Kansas and Colorado. The two locomotives and first three passenger cars left the rails.

The Associated Press first reported the story.

“We are saddened by any injury and appreciate the emergency response by local and state agencies,” the release said. “We ask the news media to be respectful of our customers, our employees and their families.”
