7-Eleven’s sweet birthday treat: a free Slurpee

This person, whose eyes have been blacked out to protect the innocent (a.k.a me), loves Slurpees.

On July 11 — or 7/11/11 — the convenience store chain offers free 7.11 oz. cups of the frozen, sugary treat to customers in the U.S. and Canada.

The term Slurpee was coined in 1968 by 7-Eleven agency director, Bob Stanford, according to a list facts on its Web site. The carbonated drink is so famous that it was even used in a joke President Obama made in late 2010: “We’re down there. It’s hot. We were sweating. Bugs everywhere. We’re down there pushing, pushing, pushing on the car. Every once in a while we'd look up and see the Republicans standing there. They’re just standing there fanning themselves — sipping on a Slurpee.”

The only question left is: What flavor will you pick? There are 26 flavors, including Berry Blaster and Mountain Dew, listed on the Slurpee’s Web site (and some pretty sobering nutritional info, as well). For my money, you can’t beat mixing Cherry with Coca-Cola. I wish I could once again find the mythical Diet Coke Slurpee, but alas have not seen it since a fateful night in 2007.
