A helicopter with five people aboard crashed into the East River near 34th Street Tuesday afternoon, sinking to the bottom of the river within minutes. It was taking off from the East 34th Street Heliport when it crashed.

Joy Garnett and her husband were on the dock of the river when she saw a helicopter start to take off and then do “a funny curlicue.”
“I thought, ‘Is that some daredevil move?’” she told the AP. “But it was obviously out of control. The body spun around at least two or three times, and then it went down.”
