Smith died at the age of 66 after two successful careers: first as a NFL defensive star and then as a comedic actor. Winter said he didn’t know the circumstances or cause of death.

The looming figure of Smith first became known for his skills on the football field, helping the Colts to win the Super Bowl in 1971. He later became a beloved comic actor in the 80’s. Here’s the star as Hightower in “Police Academy:”
