That might be changing soon.

The Iranian ambassador to Iraq said the two Americans will be released “very soon,” the Associated Press reports.

Hassan Dannaie Fir said there was a general sympathy toward the two men, especially during the holy month of Ramadan when pardons are traditionally handed down.

The trial verdict is expected to be handed down on Aug. 7.

Iran maintains the three hikers were not in the Kurdistan region for a pleasure trip — they were there as spies. The three Americans insist they stepped off a path and mistakenly crossed into Iranian territory.
