Twitter creator tweets the story of the site

Twitter’s fifth birthday is still one week away, but site creator Jack Dorsey has started telling the story of the site in the most fitting way possible:

The name Twitter came from @Noah Glass & the Oxford English: “a short inconsequential burst of information, chirps from birds.” #twttrless than a minute ago via Twitter for iPadJack Dorsey

Twitter has changed the world. Shall we count the ways? Since March 21, 2006, the site has grown from 8 to 400 employees. Twitter logs an average of 460,000 new accounts per day, and users tweet at a rate of 456 tweets per second.

So, here’s to you, Twitter, by far the most verbose 5-year-old we know. In the days leading up to March 21, keep track of the conversation by using #twittr.
