Any ice Monday morning commute? Winter weather advisory posted for D.C. area

* Winter weather weather advisory 3-10 a.m. Monday *

Early morning update: D.C. and Montgomery County schools will open 2 hours late. Students and teachers should report two hours after their regular start time. More info from D.C. schools..

From 4:46 p.m.: A warm front lifts through the region tomorrow and unseasonably mild air is on the way for mid-week. But before the warm air gets here, an area of light rain will fall into a pocket of lingering cold air, creating potentially icy conditions for Monday morning’s rush hour.

Areas north and west of the beltway and, especially, out towards Frederick and Leesburg are most likely to experience sleet and freezing rain. Locations south and southeast of beltway may get just rain or some isolated patches of iciness but should check updates in the morning.

The worst conditions are expected between 4 and 8 a.m. As the morning wears on, temperatures will rise above freezing from southeast to northwest and conditions will steadily improve.

Precipitation amounts will generally be light and some areas may see very little (if any) ice and rain, but it just takes a little ice to cause problems, especially since ground/road temperatures are cold in the wake of the recent cold snap. Untreated roads that get freezing rain will become slick if not treacherous.

See detailed information by regional zones below.

Light wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow develops around 3-5 a.m. Widespread icy roads and school delays are likely, possibly some cancellations. Temperatures probably don’t rise above freezing until 10 a.m. to noon. Total snow/sleet accumulation less than a half-inch.

Zone 2

Light freezing rain and/or sleet, maybe mixed with a little snow, develops around 4-6 a.m. Some icy roads possible, especially untreated ones outside the Beltway. Some school delays are possble.Temperatures probably rise above freezing from south to north between 9 and 11 a.m. Little or no snow/sleet accumulation expected.

Zone 3

Light rain, maybe mixed with freezing rain and sleet, develops around 5-7 a.m. A few slick spots possible mainly on untreated side roads, bridges and overpasses. Temperatures should rise above freezing by 8 to 10 a.m.
