The weekend had a wintry feel, but like all of the other cold shots this season, it was fleeting. Milder than average temperatures are back today and persist through a good part of the week (though I woudn’t call it warm). An active southern storm pattern generates mostly rain chances Wednesday, Thursday night and, perhaps, Christmas weekend.
Today (Monday): After a freezing start, flow from the southwest and sunshine push temps through the 30s and 40s. As some high clouds stream in, mid-afternoon highs reach around 50, with a breeze from the southwest at 10-15 mph and some gusts to 20 mph. Confidence: Medium-High
Tonight: Clouds increase, but it should remain dry through the night (outside chance of patchy light rain mainly north and west of D.C. towards dawn). Lows range from the mid-to-upper 30s. Winds are from the west at around 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): A bit of moisture ahead of the next storm system approaching from the southwest brings a slight (20%) chance of light rain. For many, the day is dry. Cloud cover and a cool breeze (near 10 mph) from the northeast keep highs in the mid-to-upper 40s. Confidence: Medium
Tomorrow night: It remains cloudy with a chance of rain, particulary after midnight (50-60% chance). Flow shifts to more southerly overnight, so temperatures fall just modestly (if at all). Lows range from 40-45 (suburbs to city). Confidence: Medium
As a storm system cuts to our west, it’s a cloudy and rainy Wednesday. Southerly flow ahead of the storm lifts temperatures well into the 50s to even near 60. Clearing Wednesday night, with lows in the low 30s to near 40 (suburbs to city). Confidence: Medium
We’re in between storm systems Thursday. So we should have a good deal of sunshine although clouds may increase late in the day. It’s relatively mild, with highs 50-55. Becoming cloudy Thursday night with a chance of rain after midnight. Lows range from the mid-30s to near 40. Confidence: Medium
Rain ends during the first half of Friday, followed by partial clearing. Still no Arctic air in the region, witih highs into the low 50s. Partly cloudy Friday night, with lows from near 30 in the cooler suburbs to the upper 30s downtown. Confidence: Low-Medium
The forecast for Christmas weekend is pretty uncertain at this point. Low pressure may move towards the region, perhaps producing some rain (probably not snow given lack of Arctic air). But the timing, track and strength of the system are all up in the air. Right now, the best chance of rain is late Saturday into Saturday night; otherwise, skies are partly to mostly cloudy. Temperatures both Saturday and Sunday look seasonable with highs in the mid-40s. Lows Saturday night range from the mid-to-upper 30s. Confidence:Low
