The weeks gets off to an absolutely fantastic start with some of the nicest days of the summer. Monday through Wednesday are splendid with relatively low humidity, lots of sun, and temperatures safely shy of 90. A front on Thursday may squeeze out a thundershower. By then, most of us will focus on Irene, likely to be closing in on Southeast coast and possibly poised to take a swipe at the mid-Atlantic over the weekend.

Today (Monday): An awesome start to the week. A steady breeze from the north blows in cooler and drier air. Still, plenty of sunshine lifts temperatures into mid-80s so it’s summery. Confidence: High

Tonight: Probably the coolest night since June. Skies are clear, winds are light, and even areas downtown dip into the mid-to-upper 60s with crisp mid-50s in the cooler suburbs Confidence: Medium-High

Keep reading for the forecast through the weekend...

Tomorrow (Tuesday): The nicest day of the week? I think so. Humidity is low, temperatures comfortably warm and a pleasant light breeze from the north linger. Highs are 80-85. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: It doesn’t get much better than this. More clear skies and pleasant temps. Lows range from the mid-50s to the mid-60s (suburbs to city). Confidence: High

Wednesday delivers a third straight winning day, although there is a modest bump up in temps and humidity. Highs may reach the upper 80s and humidity climbs into the moderate range. But it can be and has been much worse. Wednesday night is not as cool, but still pleasant, with lows from the upper 50s to upper 60s (downtown) . Confidence: Medium-High

Thursday is more characteristic D.C. summer weather with an increase in humidity and highs near 90. A late day thunderstorm can’t be ruled (20-30% chance) out. Partly cloudy Thursday night, with lows in the 60s. Confidence: Medium

Friday could be the calm before the storm. Tropical breezes from the southeast may give the air a humid feel as clouds gather. A few showers could develop late in the day, with highs in the 80s. The chance of showers increases Friday night, with mild lows in the 70s. Confidence:Low-Medium

The weekend brings the chance of showers and thunderstorms, which may become persistent and heavy depending on the track of Irene. And depending on the intensity of Irene and location of landfall, strong winds are also a possibility. Given large possible errors in the both the track and intensity at this range, confidence in the forecast is low. It could be we escape significant impacts. Highs are probably in the neighborhood of 80-85 with lows near 70. Stay tuned for more detailed coverage later today and all week long. Confidence: Low-Medium
