Torrential rain accompanied the slow-moving thundershowers (atmospheric steering currents were weak) - with some of the heaviest rain falling in the heart of the District of Columbia.

Rainfall amounts exceeded 2” in some parts of D.C., including Children’s Hospital where 2.36” fell according to WeatherBug. Flash flooding occurred along Rhode Island Avenue (at both the 500 and 100 blocks) in Bloomingdale prompting its closure in both directions.

Heavy rain also fell around Tyson Corner, Reston and McLean, causing some isolated flooding. The National Weather Service collected the following totals:
Tyson Corner: 2.71”
Officially, Reagan National Airport received 0.6”. Dulles and BWI were shutout - revealing the feast or famine nature of last night’s rain event.
